About GM Oleg Romanishin
Oleg Romanishin is a proud member of the famous Lviv Chess School, founded by the great Victor Kart - one of the most celebrated regional chess institutions in the history of Soviet and Ukrainian chess. Shaped by that rich tradition, Romanishin went on to become one of the most creative and respected grandmasters of his generation.
His competitive record speaks for itself. A two-time European Team Champion and winner of the European Cup in 1984, Romanishin also earned multiple Olympic and World Championship medals as a proud member of the Ukrainian National Team. Individually, he achieved a brilliant 2nd–5th place finish at the Soviet Championship in 1975, at the time one of the most fiercely contested tournaments in the world, and reached the pinnacle of the global chess ladder by qualifying as a World Championship Candidate in 1984.
A winner of numerous international tournaments, Romanishin's career is highlighted by a triumphant performance at the supertournament in Leningrad in 1977, alongside victories at the prestigious Hastings and Reykjavik events. European Junior Champion in 1973, he built his game within the legendary Soviet chess school, developing the deep preparation, creative flair, and mastery of sharp dynamic lines that became his trademark. He trained alongside legends such as Mikhail Tal, and has since inspired generations of players through both his competitive achievements and his dedication to coaching and chess education. He remains an active and valued contributor to leading chess publications and platforms to this day.
